Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the Congress. He accused the Congress of making statements against the judiciary several times. Sarma also said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has always been committed to maintaining the independence and dignity of the judiciary, and recently the party has distanced itself from the controversial statement of Nitishant Dubey. Sarma expressed his opinion on the issue on Twitter.
Party’s separation from Nishikant Dubey’s statement
Reiterating the BJP’s commitment, Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “The Bharatiya Janata Party has always considered the independence and dignity of the judiciary as the pillar of Indian democracy. Recently, our National President Shri JP Nadda ji has distanced the party from the statement made by Shri Nishikant Dubey ji regarding the Supreme Court. Nadda ji made it clear that these statements were personal views and the party has nothing to do with it. He also reiterated the BJP’s deep respect for the judiciary.”
Serious questions raised on Congress
Sarma then referred to the Congress party’s criticism of the judiciary and said, “Whenever the Congress disagrees with any judicial decision, it criticizes the judiciary. He mentioned several examples in the history of the Congress related to the judiciary, such as – Justice Deepak Mishra, against whom the Congress and other opposition parties brought an impeachment motion without solid evidence. Similarly, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who faced intense criticism after the Ayodhya verdict. Justice Arun Mishra and D.Y. Chandrachud also came under the target of the Congress when their decisions did not match the political view of the Congress.”
Respecting the judiciary is the need of democracy
Chief Minister Sarma also said that this trend shows that the Congress party challenges judicial decisions that go against their political discourse. He said, “This particular criticism not only undermines the sanctity of judicial processes but also challenges the very ideals of democracy. All political parties must accept judicial decisions with honesty and consistency. Respect for the judiciary should not depend only on whether the decisions are in our favour or not. Such criticism undermines public confidence and questions the fundamental principles of democracy.”
Sarma concluded, “As long as the BJP respects the role of the judiciary with impartiality, opposition parties must consider their criticisms. It is important that criticisms are not just for political gains but are based on principles.”
